Discover more about Taman Warisan Tasek Merimbun

Tasek Merimbun Heritage Park, located in the Tutong District of Brunei, is a captivating blend of natural beauty and cultural significance. As Brunei's largest natural lake, Tasek Merimbun is an S-shaped expanse of dark water, a result of tannins from decaying leaves. The 7,800-hectare park surrounding the lake is a sanctuary for diverse ecosystems, including peat swamp forests, mangroves, and lowland mixed dipterocarp forests. The park is not only a haven for nature enthusiasts but also a place steeped in history. The Dusun people have inhabited the area for centuries, considering the lake and its surrounding forests sacred. According to local legend, the lake was discovered by Imbun, a Dusun hunter, who brought his community to settle by its abundant resources. Tasek Merimbun was declared the first ASEAN Heritage Park in 1984, recognizing its importance in biodiversity conservation and cultural heritage. Visitors can explore the park's natural wonders through environment-friendly boat rides on the lake, hike along scenic nature trails, and relax at lakeside gazebos. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the over 200 species of birds that call the park home, including endangered Storm's storks. The park also features Pulau Jeludong, an archaeological site with ancient ancestral remains. Every year on the first of May, the ethnic Dusuns celebrate the annual Adau Gayoh festival, which marks the end of the padi harvesting season.
