Istana Nurul Iman, meaning 'Palace of the Light of Faith,' is the official residence of the Sultan of Brunei and the seat of the Brunei government. Completed in 1984, the palace is a symbol of Brunei's independence and a testament to its rich cultural heritage. Designed by Filipino architect Leandro V. Locsin, the palace blends Islamic aesthetics, traditional Malay architecture, and European luxury. The interior was designed by Khuan Chew, also known for her work on the Burj Al Arab in Dubai.This colossal palace boasts 1,788 rooms, 257 bathrooms, a 5,000-person banquet hall, and a 1,500-person mosque. The palace also includes 18 elevators, 44 marble staircases, five swimming pools, a helipad, and a garage with space for over 100 cars. The dome is decorated with 22-carat gold. Istana Nurul Iman is not only the Sultan's residence but also the center of Brunei's government, hosting state events and foreign dignitaries.While the palace is not generally open to the public, it welcomes visitors during the three-day Hari Raya Aidilfitri festival following Ramadan. During this time, the Sultan and his family greet citizens and visitors in a tradition called 'rumah terbuka,' meaning 'open house'. Visitors may have the opportunity to meet the Sultan and receive gifts. Outside of Hari Raya, the palace can be viewed from a distance, particularly from the Brunei River.
