Bukit Mas: Limbang's Landmark Limestone Hill

Bukit Mas, also known as Gold Hill, is a prominent natural landmark in Limbang, a town in northern Sarawak. Rising 210 meters above the town, this limestone outcrop is covered in lush rainforest, creating a striking visual contrast against the urban landscape. The summit provides breathtaking views that extend into neighboring Brunei, making it a favorite spot for photographers and nature enthusiasts. Historically, Bukit Mas holds significance beyond its scenic appeal. In 1922, a stone statue of Ganesha, a Hindu deity, was discovered on the hill, suggesting early Hindu influences in the region. This artifact, along with the discovery of gold objects in 1899, adds a layer of historical intrigue to the site. Today, Bukit Mas is a popular recreational area for locals and tourists alike. Visitors can reach the summit either by a steep road or by climbing a long staircase that starts from the Lake Garden at the eastern end of town. A small Buddhist shrine is located halfway up the summit road. Taman Tasik Bukit Mas, a recreational park nestled at the base of the hill, offers walking trails, a lake, and scenic viewpoints.
