Discover more about Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque

The Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, located in the heart of Bandar Seri Begawan, is a breathtaking testament to Brunei's rich cultural and religious heritage. Completed in 1958, the mosque was commissioned by Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III, the 28th Sultan of Brunei, and is named in his honor. He envisioned the mosque as a reflection of Islam's glory, and it has since become one of the most iconic landmarks in Southeast Asia. The mosque's design is a captivating fusion of Mughal and Italian architectural styles. The exterior is primarily white marble, with a majestic golden dome that dominates the city's skyline. The main dome is covered in 3.3 million pieces of gold Venetian mosaics. Rising to a height of 52 meters (171 feet), the mosque can be seen from virtually anywhere in Bandar Seri Begawan. The minaret, standing at 51 meters (166 feet) high, was once the tallest structure in Brunei. Inside, the mosque is equally impressive, adorned with stained glass windows, Italian marble walls, British chandeliers, and carpets from Saudi Arabia. The mosque is set in an artificial lagoon, creating a tranquil and picturesque setting. A replica of a 16th-century royal barge, known as the Mahligai Barge, sits in the lagoon and was used for Quran reading competitions. The mosque is surrounded by gardens, enhancing its serene atmosphere. Visitors are welcome to explore the exterior and gardens, but photography is not permitted inside. Modest attire is required. The mosque is not only a place of worship but also a symbol of Brunei's identity and devotion to Islam.
