Russian Monument Square, located in the heart of Sofia, is a significant historical landmark symbolizing the gratitude of the Bulgarian people to Russia for their assistance in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878, which led to Bulgaria's liberation from Ottoman rule. The square's centerpiece is the Russian Monument, an obelisk erected in 1882 with funds collected by the Russian people.The monument itself is a rectangular pyramid with a truncated top and a three-step pedestal. The eastern side features a marble relief of the coat of arms of Russia and the Order of St. George, along with a text commemorating Alexander II in pre-reform Russian. The western side features another inscribed plate. While the monument's designer is not definitively known, it is believed to be the work of either architect Vokar or Vladimir Sherwood.Today, Russian Monument Square is situated at a bustling roundabout, marking an important junction of Skobelev and Totleben boulevards. Despite the noise and pollution from the surrounding traffic, the square provides a space for reflection on the historical events that shaped Bulgaria's national identity. The square also provides easy access to public transportation and is close to some of Sofia's largest parks.
