A short hike through a beautiful forest leads to this peaceful spot on the Skakavitsa River, a part of the Aleko waterfalls. It's a refreshing escape close to the city.

Getting There

  • Walking

    From the former Dragalevtsi sanatorium, take the wide path into the forest. Almost immediately, a narrow path splits off to the left – follow this path towards Dolen Alekov Waterfall. The wide path continues to the Low Mountain Circular Path of Vitosha and Upper Aleko Waterfall. The path to the left winds through the forest along the sanatorium fence. The route is uneven, descending and ascending steeply in several places. After about 5 minutes, you will come to an open area with Alekova Skala (Aleko's Rock) to the left, with two benches. Continue on the path closer to the rock, descending. After 2-3 minutes, you will see a shelter on the left, and behind it is the Skakavitsa River. Dolen Alekov Waterfall is to the right, behind the shelter, hidden behind the rocks.

  • Public Transport

    From Sofia city center, take bus 93 from Vitosha Metro Station to the Dragalevtsi stop. From there, walk uphill for about 30 minutes, following signs for Park Vitosha. From the park entrance, follow the walking directions to reach the waterfall. A single bus ticket costs around 1.60 BGN.

  • Taxi/Ride-share

    From Sofia city center, take a taxi or ride-share to 'Lifta Dragalevtsi, 1415, м. Орехите'. The drive takes approximately 30 minutes depending on traffic and costs approximately 15 to 25 BGN. From there, follow the walking directions to reach the waterfall.

Dolen Alekov Waterfall, though lesser-known than its counterpart, the Upper Aleko Waterfall, offers a tranquil natural escape within easy reach of Sofia. Situated on the Skakavitsa River, near the abandoned sanatorium above the Dragalevtsi neighborhood, the waterfall is part of the Aleko waterfalls on Vitosha Mountain. The journey to Dolen Alekov Waterfall is a short and pleasant hike through a beautiful forest. The trail can be narrow and steep in places, but the walk to the falls takes less than 10 minutes. The area is not well-marked, but the reward is a peaceful, cool environment a stone's throw from the city. The waterfall is accessible from both the Low Mountain Circular Path and the Dragalevtsi - Aleko Hut road. In 1910, the Aleko waterfalls were named after Aleko Konstantinov, a founder of organized tourism in Bulgaria who frequented the falls during his walks around Dragalevtsi Monastery.
