Discover more about Main Parade Lawn

The Main Parade Lawn, situated in the heart of the Presidio, is a testament to San Francisco's commitment to green spaces and community engagement. Established in 1898, it initially served as a training ground for soldiers stationed at the adjacent Montgomery Street Barracks. Military drills and ceremonies were a common sight until 1937 when it was converted into a parking lot. For over six decades, the asphalt-covered area served its utilitarian purpose until a transformative decision was made in 2011. The asphalt was removed and replaced with lush grass, breathing new life into the area. Today, the Main Parade Lawn is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. It’s a place to relax, picnic, play frisbee, and soak in the California sunshine. The lawn also hosts community events, concerts, and festivals throughout the year. Its central location provides easy access to other Presidio attractions such as the Presidio Tunnel Tops, the Presidio Visitor Center, and The Walt Disney Family Museum. Framed by historic buildings, the Main Parade Lawn offers iconic views of the San Francisco Bay. It stands as a reminder of the Presidio's past while embracing its present as a dynamic public space. Whether you're looking for a place to unwind, explore the Presidio's history, or enjoy a community event, the Main Parade Lawn offers something for everyone.
