    History and Legacy

Founded in 1906 by Suyeichi Okamura on Geary Boulevard, Benkyodo became one of Japantown's original businesses. The shop endured challenges, including temporary closure during World War II internment, reopening postwar under Hirofumi Okamura. In 1959, it relocated to 1747 Buchanan Street at Sutter, where brothers Ricky and Bobby took over in 1990, upholding the family tradition until retirement closure on March 31, 2022.

    Specialties and Offerings

Benkyodo specialized in fresh Japanese sweets, crafting mochi and manju daily. Highlights included strawberry and blueberry-filled mochi, mango mochi, yomogi, kinako, and kuri manju—larger and more affordable than typical imports. Fresh fruit mochi with strawberries or mangos, plus pink mochi with lima bean paste, sold out quickly, encouraging early visits. The confections evoked authentic chagashi for tea ceremonies.

    Japantown Location

Nestled in vibrant Japantown, the shop occupied a prime spot near Sutter and Buchanan. It featured a sweets counter on the left and a simple diner on the right serving breakfast donuts and lunch sandwiches to locals. Cash-only policy and preorder options via phone enhanced its neighborhood charm.

    Cultural Significance

As a century-old institution, Benkyodo preserved Japanese confectionery traditions amid San Francisco's evolving landscape. Its handmade wagashi connected generations, offering a taste of heritage in every bite. Though closed, its legacy endures in Japantown's cultural fabric.

    Visitor Experience

Patrons raved about the superior freshness over frozen alternatives, with treats half the Japanese price yet triple the size. The casual boutique atmosphere invited quick stops for unique flavors, making it a must-visit despite sell-outs.
