Founded in 1906 by Suyeichi Okamura on Geary Boulevard, Benkyodo quickly became a cornerstone of San Francisco's Japantown. The name, meaning 'affordable,' reflected its community focus. The shop endured challenges, including a temporary closure during World War II internment, reopening postwar under Hirofumi Okamura. In 1959, it relocated to 1747 Buchanan Street, and by 1990, brothers Ricky and Bobby Okamura carried the torch, handcrafting up to 1,000 pieces daily until retirement in 2022.

Signature Sweets and Flavors

Benkyodo specialized in traditional Japanese confections like mochi—soft rice cakes—and manju, steamed buns filled with sweet bean paste. Fresh fruits elevated modern varieties: strawberry mochi on weekends, plus blueberry and mango options year-round. Red bean, mung bean, and lima bean fillings offered classic tastes. Made fresh each morning, these treats were celebrated for their delicate, chewy texture—not too sweet, with juicy fruit bits visible through thin skins.

Nestled in vibrant Japantown, Benkyodo drew locals and tourists alike. The small shop featured a counter for quick grabs and a modest cafe side serving coffee, donuts, and sandwiches—a social hub where generations gathered. Final Days and Cultural Impact

Announced closure on March 31, 2022, sparked nationwide queues—some waiting overnight for last mochi. The Okamura family hoped for a successor but retired without one, ending Japantown's oldest business. Videos captured emotional farewells, with fans praising its authenticity.
