    Historic Winemaking Legacy

Bernardo Winery stands as one of California's most storied wine destinations, established in 1889 on what was once the La Cañada de San Bernardo Spanish land grant. The winery's remarkable survival through Prohibition—achieved by producing sacramental wine for the Catholic Church—demonstrates the resilience and ingenuity of its founders. In 1927, Sicilian immigrant Vincent Rizzo purchased the property during the height of Prohibition, and his descendants continue to operate it today as a third-generation family business. The winery's bonded license number, 3567, reflects its place among California's earliest commercial wineries.

    Wine Production and Terroir

Bernardo Winery specializes in wines crafted from locally sourced San Diego County grapes, including varietals such as Syrah, Petite Sirah, Zinfandel, Viognier, Chardonnay, and Sangiovese. The winemaking philosophy blends traditional California methods with modern enological practices, overseen by Master Vintner Ross Rizzo and a talented team including UC Davis-trained enologist Matty Ward. Award-winning selections like Fantasia, Luminosa, and Fiore have earned medals from The Toast of the Coast Wine Competition. While the modern production facility operates in a converted tractor barn on the property's north side, visitors can explore the historic antique winemaking facility in the courtyard, where massive redwood barrels built over 130 years ago showcase the old ways of winemaking.

    Village Atmosphere and Dining

The winery functions as a self-contained village destination rather than a traditional tasting room. The Kitchen restaurant, housed in the courtyard center, serves traditional house-made pastas, wood-fired brick-oven pizzas on weekends, and fresh sauces with vegetarian and gluten-free options available. Service is walk-up style, allowing guests to select seating throughout the patios, courtyard, and gardens. Manzanita Roasting Coffee House offers world-class coffee in a quaint roastery setting, while V's Sweet Shoppe features locally made gelato and estate-produced desserts curated by the winery's pastry chef.

    Shopping and Cultural Experiences

The Artist Village and Shops occupy the winery courtyard, featuring unique locally owned galleries and boutiques where visitors can browse art, accessories, home goods, and crafts while enjoying their wine. A certified Farmers Market operates every Friday from 9 AM to 1 PM in the lower parking lot, offering fresh produce, provisions, flowers, artisan goods, and food vendors. Beyond shopping, the winery hosts wine education courses, paint-and-sip classes, concerts, arts and crafts fairs, and exclusive dining experiences throughout the year.

    Grounds and Gardens

The property encompasses beautifully maintained gardens and grounds ideal for leisurely exploration. The Pepper Tree Lawn, a sprawling garden area filled with lush grass and vineyard views, features a 175-year-old pepper tree and serves as one of several event venues. Historic winemaking equipment scattered throughout the grounds provides tangible connections to the winery's past, creating a nostalgic atmosphere that complements the rustic charm of the setting.

    Events and Gatherings

Bernardo Winery accommodates private events ranging from 20 to 1,200 guests, with experienced event planning for corporate functions, intimate celebrations, weddings, anniversaries, and family gatherings. Multiple indoor and outdoor venues provide flexibility for day or evening events, with dedicated wedding and event management services available to customize each occasion.
