Discover more about Continuum Estate

Continuum Estate, located on Pritchard Hill in St. Helena, stands as a beacon of the Mondavi family's continued pursuit of winemaking excellence. Founded in 2005 by Robert Mondavi and his children, Tim and Marcia, after the sale of the Robert Mondavi Winery, Continuum represents a new chapter in their storied history, a commitment to producing a single, world-class red wine that embodies the essence of its estate vineyards. The estate's location on Pritchard Hill offers visitors breathtaking panoramic views of Napa Valley and the San Francisco Bay. The vineyards, planted at elevations between 1,300 and 1,600 feet, benefit from the unique terroir of the area, characterized by iron-rich, volcanic soils that impart a distinct minerality to the wines. The rocky soils force the vines to struggle, resulting in low yields and fruit of exceptional concentration and complexity. The winery itself is a modern architectural masterpiece, designed by Backen, Gillam & Kroeger Architects, the same firm behind other prestigious Napa Valley estates like Harlan Estate and Ovid Estate. The design seamlessly integrates with the natural landscape, featuring clean lines, natural materials, and expansive windows that frame the stunning views. The winery incorporates sustainable practices, including a roof designed to catch water for winery operations. A visit to Continuum Estate is an intimate and educational experience. Tastings are by appointment only, ensuring personalized attention and a relaxed atmosphere. Guests are often greeted by a member of the Mondavi family, who share their passion for winemaking and the history of the estate. The tasting typically includes a current release of Continuum, along with a slightly older vintage, allowing guests to appreciate the wine's evolution over time. The wines are often paired with estate-produced olive oil, Calvestrano olives, and artisanal cheese, enhancing the tasting experience. The winemaking process at Continuum is meticulous, reflecting the family's commitment to quality. The grapes are hand-harvested at night to preserve their freshness and sorted before and after destemming. Fermentation takes place in French oak and concrete tanks, with careful attention to temperature control and extraction. The wine is then aged in French oak barriques, approximately two-thirds new, for 20 to 22 months. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered to preserve its natural flavors and aromas. Continuum's flagship wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, reflecting the unique terroir of the Sage Mountain Vineyard. The blend varies slightly from year to year, depending on the characteristics of the vintage. The wine is known for its elegance, complexity, and aging potential, with the ability to evolve and improve over many years. The Mondavi family's history in Napa Valley dates back to 1943 when Cesare Mondavi purchased the Charles Krug winery. Robert Mondavi, Cesare's son, went on to establish his own winery in 1966, revolutionizing the California wine industry with his focus on quality and innovation. Tim Mondavi, Robert's son, continued the family legacy, working as the winemaker at Robert Mondavi Winery for 30 years before founding Continuum. Continuum Estate is more than just a winery; it's a symbol of the Mondavi family's enduring passion for winemaking and their commitment to excellence. A visit to Continuum is an opportunity to experience the beauty of Napa Valley, the artistry of winemaking, and the warmth of the Mondavi family's hospitality. It's a chance to taste a wine that reflects the unique terroir of Pritchard Hill and the legacy of one of California's most influential winemaking families. While visiting, take note of the label, designed by Chiara Mondavi as a shadow drawing of a Cabernet Franc vine. Also, the winery hosts a Blessing of the Grapes each year when the first fruit is harvested, a tradition dating back to the early days of Robert Mondavi Winery. Future plans for Continuum Estate include tunneling a cave further into the hillside, adding another dimension to the winemaking process and visitor experience. The estate's commitment to sustainability and quality ensures that it will remain a premier destination for wine lovers for generations to come. The attention to detail is evident in every aspect of the estate, from the meticulously manicured vineyards to the elegant tasting room. The staff is knowledgeable and passionate, eager to share their expertise and create a memorable experience for every guest. Continuum strives to be recognized as one of the world's great wines, and their dedication to quality and innovation is evident in every bottle. The estate's commitment to sustainability and its stunning location make it a must-visit destination for any wine enthusiast visiting Napa Valley. The experience is not just about tasting wine; it's about immersing oneself in the history, passion, and artistry of the Mondavi family and their enduring legacy in the world of wine.
