    Walking

    If you're already in Encinitas, you can walk to the Coastal Rail Trail. From the Encinitas Library at 540 Cornish Dr, walk south on Cornish Dr towards S Coast Hwy 101. Turn left onto S Coast Hwy 101, and continue walking for about 0.4 miles until you reach the Coastal Rail Trail at 1298 S Coast Hwy 101.

    Public Transport

    From downtown San Diego, take the North County Transit District's COASTER train north to the Encinitas station. The train ride takes about 40 minutes. Once you arrive at the Encinitas station, walk north on S Coast Hwy 101 for approximately 0.5 miles. The Coastal Rail Trail will be on your left at 1298 S Coast Hwy 101. A one-way fare on the Coaster is typically around $5.50.

    The Coastal Rail Trail is a developing 44-mile route between Oceanside and San Diego, offering a scenic and practical transportation option along the Southern California coast. The trail is open in distinct sections, traversing beachside communities like Oceanside, Carlsbad, Solana Beach, and Encinitas. The Encinitas segment, opened in May 2019, provides a 1.3-mile multi-use path along the east side of the railroad tracks near San Elijo Avenue, stretching from Chesterfield Drive to the Santa Fe Drive undercrossing. This section improves biking and walking connections to local parks, businesses, beaches, and schools. The trail offers stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and opportunities to spot marine wildlife. Interpretive signs provide insights into the unique coastal ecosystem. Eventually, the Coastal Rail Trail will connect Oceanside to San Diego. The trail's history dates back to the late 1980s, with the first segment opening in Solana Beach in the early 2000s. The trail runs next to the Surf Line, an active railway that first opened in 1882.
