Discover more about Grant Park

Grant Park, a 107-acre expanse, sits in the hills overlooking Ventura's City Hall, providing unparalleled views of the California coast. The park's most recognizable landmark is the Serra Cross, which has roots tracing back to Father Junipero Serra's founding of Mission San Buenaventura in 1782. Originally a wooden cross used to guide travelers, it has been renovated and replaced over the years, standing as a symbol of the city's history and enduring spirit. In 1918, Kenneth and Tonie Grant donated the land to the city, envisioning it as a space for public enjoyment. Although Grant initially hoped to build an observatory on the property, the park evolved into a beloved recreational area. Over the years, improvements have included roads leading to the cross in the 1920s and a circular stone pedestal and concrete pathway in 1932. The park's trails offer a gentle climb through coastal sage scrub, rewarding hikers with ever-improving views. In spring, lupines and other wildflowers add color to the landscape. The main trail connects to the Ventura Botanical Gardens, showcasing plants from five Mediterranean climate zones. The Ventura Botanical Gardens feature a diverse collection of plants, artistic benches, and sculptures, creating a serene and educational environment. The Merewether Welcome Center provides visitor information, a gift shop, and restrooms. Grant Park is more than just a scenic viewpoint; it's a place to connect with Ventura's rich history, natural beauty, and community spirit. The park's panoramic vistas have also made it a popular spot for prom photos, yoga sessions, and sunset viewing. Despite challenges, including damage from the 2017 Thomas Fire, Grant Park has persevered as a symbol of hope and resilience for the Ventura community.
