Discover more about Cactus to Clouds Trail

The Cactus to Clouds Trail (C2C) is not just a hike; it's an endurance test that takes you from the Sonoran Desert to a sub-alpine environment. Beginning at the Palm Springs Art Museum at approximately 520 feet (160 m) elevation, the trail climbs over 10,000 feet (3,100 m) to San Jacinto Peak at 10,834 feet (3,302 m). This extreme elevation gain in a relatively short distance makes it one of the steepest and most challenging trails in the world. The initial part of the route follows the Skyline Trail, an 11-mile (17.7 km) path that ascends nearly 8,000 feet (2,438 m). This section is known for its exposed terrain, steep switchbacks, and lack of water sources. Hikers then transition onto the San Jacinto Peak Trail for the final push to the summit. Along the way, hikers pass through varying landscapes, from arid desert to lush forests, experiencing a wide range of temperatures and weather conditions. C2C's origins trace back to 1991 when members of the Coachella Valley Hiking Club marked the faint Skyline Trail. They later organized the first official Cactus to Clouds Challenge in 1993. The name "Cactus to Clouds" was coined by Roger Keezer, a member of the hiking club. Today, the trail attracts experienced hikers seeking a demanding and rewarding adventure. Permits are required and can be obtained at the Long Valley Ranger Station near the top of the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway.
