St. James Park: A Downtown San Jose Oasis
Discover a historic downtown oasis in San Jose, where green spaces, monuments, and community events converge in St. James Park.
St. James Park, located in downtown San Jose, is a historic park that has been a central part of the city's identity since the mid-19th century. Originally mapped out as St. James Square in 1848, it wasn't until the construction of Trinity Episcopal Church in 1863 that the area began to develop. The park's landscaping, initiated by William O'Donnell in the late 1860s, aimed to create a shaded urban retreat. In 1885, a fountain was installed at the center of the square, leading to the site being called St. James Park. The park became a popular venue for public gatherings, concerts, and even presidential speeches. A statue of President William McKinley was erected in 1903 to commemorate his visit to the city. However, the park also bears witness to darker moments in San Jose's history, including a notorious lynching in 1933. Today, St. James Park offers a green respite in the urban environment. Visitors can explore the park's walking paths, admire the McKinley statue, and reflect on the park's layered history. The park also hosts various events, including concerts and movie nights. Despite being bisected by a road and light rail tracks, St. James Park remains an important urban open space in San Jose.
