Christ Cathedral: A Modern Sanctuary of Glass and Light

Christ Cathedral, formerly known as the Crystal Cathedral, stands as an iconic landmark in Garden Grove, California. Designed by Philip Johnson and completed in 1980, the building is renowned for its innovative use of glass and steel. The structure comprises over 10,000 rectangular panes of glass, creating a shimmering exterior and allowing natural light to flood the interior. Originally built as a Protestant church, the Crystal Cathedral became the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange in 2012 and was rededicated as Christ Cathedral in 2019 after extensive renovations. The interior was adapted to suit Catholic liturgical practices while preserving the building's architectural integrity. These renovations included the addition of a sanctuary, ciborium and altar. The cathedral also features a custom-made platinum-leaf baldachin suspended above the altar. The Christ Cathedral campus includes several notable structures, such as the Tower of Hope, designed by Richard Neutra, and the Cultural Center, designed by Richard Meier. The Hazel Wright Organ, one of the world's largest musical instruments, is housed within the cathedral and was meticulously restored in Italy. Visitors can explore the cathedral's architecture, art gallery, and memorial gardens. The campus hosts various events, including Masses, concerts, and cultural exhibitions.
