Christ Cathedral, formerly known as the Crystal Cathedral, stands as an iconic landmark in Garden Grove, California. Designed by Philip Johnson and completed in 1980, the building is renowned for its innovative use of glass and steel. The structure comprises over 10,000 rectangular panes of glass, creating a shimmering exterior and allowing natural light to flood the interior. Originally built as a Protestant church, the Crystal Cathedral became the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange in 2012 and was rededicated as Christ Cathedral in 2019 after extensive renovations. The interior was adapted to suit Catholic liturgical practices while preserving the building's architectural integrity. These renovations included the addition of a sanctuary, ciborium and altar. The cathedral also features a custom-made platinum-leaf baldachin suspended above the altar.
