The Pickford Center for Motion Picture Study, located in the heart of Hollywood at 1313 Vine Street, is a treasure trove for film enthusiasts and a vital institution for preserving motion picture history. As one of the Los Angeles-area facilities of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Pickford Center houses the Academy Film Archive, a collection of over 230,000 items, making it one of the most diverse and extensive of its kind. The building itself has a rich history, predating its role as a film archive. Constructed in 1948 as the Don Lee Mutual Broadcasting Building, it's the oldest surviving studio building in Los Angeles designed specifically for television. In its early years, it hosted the production of iconic television shows such as "Queen for a Day," "The Dating Game," "The Newlywed Game," and "Barney Miller". The building was later acquired by the Academy in 2000 and renamed after Mary Pickford, a legendary silent film actress and one of the Academy's founders. The Pickford Center's primary function is to preserve and protect film history. The Academy Film Archive maintains all Academy Award-winning films in the Best Picture and Documentary categories, as well as many other Oscar-nominated films. It also houses the personal collections of filmmakers such as Alfred Hitchcock, Cecil B. DeMille, and Fred Zinnemann. The facility includes temperature-controlled storage spaces and a state-of-the-art fire suppression system to ensure the preservation of these delicate materials. While access to the archive itself is generally limited to researchers and scholars by appointment, the Pickford Center offers public programming and screenings at the Linwood Dunn Theater, a 286-seat venue named after visual effects pioneer Linwood Dunn. These events provide an opportunity to experience classic films on the big screen and learn more about the history of cinema. The Pickford Center also plays a crucial role in the pre-production of the Academy Awards, providing historical footage and film clips for the annual broadcast.
