Discover more about Mission Plaza

Mission Plaza, situated in front of the iconic Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, serves as the central gathering place and a focal point of downtown San Luis Obispo. The plaza's story began in 1971 when Monterey Street was closed off, transforming the dusty street into a public square. Today, it offers a blend of historical significance and natural charm. The plaza provides access to the Mission's history and the city's past in a beautiful setting. The careful restoration of San Luis Obispo Creek, which runs through the plaza, highlights the area's natural history. A statue of a grizzly bear commemorates the Valley of the Bears, the original name given to the region. Throughout the year, Mission Plaza hosts a variety of events, including the popular Concerts in the Plaza every Friday evening during the summer. These concerts feature live music, dancing, and a family-friendly atmosphere. The plaza also hosts cultural events such as Dia de los Muertos. However, the plaza's history also has a darker side. In 1858, it served as a jail and courthouse for the Committee of Vigilance, who were responsible for the hanging of seven Californios. Today, Mission Plaza is a place where locals and tourists can relax, attend events, and appreciate the blend of history and natural beauty in the heart of San Luis Obispo.
