Discover more about NASA Ames Research Center

NASA Ames Research Center, nestled in California's Silicon Valley, has been at the forefront of aerospace innovation since its establishment in 1939. Originally founded as the second laboratory of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), it transitioned into a key NASA research center in 1958. Named in honor of Joseph Sweetman Ames, a pioneering physicist, the center has played a vital role in numerous NASA missions, contributing significantly to aeronautics, space exploration, and scientific discovery. While the active research facilities are not open for public tours , the NASA Ames Exploration Center offers an engaging glimpse into the world of NASA. Here, visitors can embark on a self-guided tour, exploring interactive exhibits and displays that showcase NASA's groundbreaking missions and technologies. Highlights include a real moon rock from the Apollo 15 mission, a Martian meteorite, and a mock space station, allowing visitors to experience what it's like to live and work in space. The Exploration Center also features flight simulations through the Milky Way Galaxy in the Immersive Theater and a Shuttle Cockpit Simulator. Ames' contributions span various fields, including wind tunnel testing, rover design, space robotics, and supercomputing. The center has been instrumental in missions such as the Kepler Space Telescope, which discovered thousands of exoplanets, and continues to contribute to our understanding of the universe. Although you can't tour the main research areas, a visit to the Exploration Center provides a fascinating insight into NASA's past, present, and future endeavors.
