Discover more about John Rains House - A San Bernardino County Museum Historic Site

The John Rains House, also known as Casa de Rancho Cucamonga, is a captivating historical site that transports visitors to 19th-century California. Built in 1860-1861, this well-preserved adobe home was the residence of John Rains and María Merced Williams, offering a unique window into the Rancho era. John Rains, a successful businessman and rancher, purchased the Rancho Cucamonga land grant in 1858. The house itself was constructed using bricks made from local red clay and featured innovative cooling systems, including creek water ducts running beneath the house. Rains was also a prominent socialite who opened California's first commercial winery. His home was a place for lavish parties for local elites. Visitors can explore the rooms, furnished with period-appropriate items, and learn about the daily life of the Rains family and the Rancho community. The site also includes other buildings, such as a church, barn, blacksmith shop and saddle-making shop. Knowledgeable guides share stories of the Rains family, the local community, and the challenges and triumphs of the era. The San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors voted on June 28, 2022, to change the site's name to the María Merced Williams and John Rains House to recognize María's importance. The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, acknowledging its significance in preserving Southern California's cultural heritage.
