Discover more about Botanical Building

The Botanical Building, nestled in the heart of Balboa Park, is a captivating landmark and one of the park's most photographed scenes. Constructed for the 1915-16 Panama-California Exposition, it stands as one of the largest lath structures in the world. Alfred D. Robinson, founder of the San Diego Floral Society, conceived the idea of a lath house to showcase Southern California's native flora, along with tropical and temperate plants from around the globe. Designed by Carleton Winslow, Frank P. Allen, Jr., and Thomas Hunter, the building's steel frame is enveloped by 12 miles of redwood slats. This unique design provides ample shade and allows for natural light and air circulation, creating a welcoming atmosphere for visitors and plants alike. Inside, visitors can explore a diverse collection of over 2,100 permanent plants, including cycads, ferns, orchids, and palms. Seasonal flower displays add vibrant splashes of color throughout the year. The building's interior evokes a tropical paradise, with towering trees, delicate orchids, and colorful flowers. The lily pond and lagoon in front of the building were part of the original 1915 design and add to the serene setting. During World War I and II, the Navy even used the pond for swimming lessons. Following a recent restoration that focused on returning the building to its original 1915 design while enhancing accessibility and the visitor experience, the Botanical Building now features state-of-the-art lighting, improved pathways, and new water features.
