Discover more about El Molino Viejo

El Molino Viejo, also known as The Old Mill, is a significant historical landmark located in San Marino, California. Completed in 1816, it served as a grist mill for the Mission San Gabriel, playing a vital role in the mission's agricultural activities. Constructed by Father José María de Zalvidea and Tongva Mission Indian laborers, the two-story adobe structure stands as the oldest commercial building in Southern California and a prime example of western adobe-style architecture. After ceasing operation as a mill in 1823, El Molino Viejo transitioned through various uses, including a residence and even a golf course clubhouse. It was rediscovered in the late 19th century, and in 1903, the Huntington family purchased the property. Today, the site functions as a museum and art gallery, offering visitors a chance to explore its rich history. The building's architecture features oven-baked brick, volcanic tuff, and sun-dried adobe slabs, showcasing the construction techniques of the era. The surrounding gardens, maintained by the Diggers Garden Club, add to the site's charm, with a patio hosting events during the spring and summer. A set of millstones, rediscovered by General George S. Patton in his childhood, are preserved on the patio. Visitors can explore the original grinding room, view antique paintings and furnishings, and learn about the mill's operation. The structural outlines of the water cistern, which once powered the mill, are still visible. El Molino Viejo is recognized as a California Historical Landmark and a National Historic Landmark, solidifying its importance in preserving the history of California.
