    Discover more about Embarcadero

The Embarcadero, meaning "the place to embark" in Spanish, stretches along San Francisco's waterfront from Oracle Park to Pier 45. This vibrant area, constructed on reclaimed land, boasts a rich history as a major transportation hub and port. Originally called Yerba Buena Cove, the area was transformed starting in the mid-1800s as the city expanded. A seawall was constructed, and the mudflats were filled, creating the Financial District we know today. The Embarcadero served as a bustling port during the Gold Rush era and well into the 20th century. For many years, an elevated freeway separated the city from the waterfront until it was torn down in 1991 after sustaining damage in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. This removal paved the way for the grand palm-lined boulevard that exists today, lined with shops, restaurants, and attractions. Today, the Embarcadero offers a plethora of activities. Visitors can explore the Ferry Building Marketplace, a historic landmark filled with gourmet shops and artisan food vendors. The Exploratorium, a hands-on science museum, provides interactive fun for all ages. Pier 39 is a lively entertainment complex, home to the Aquarium of the Bay and the famous sea lions. The Embarcadero also provides access to Alcatraz Island via ferries departing from Pier 33. With its stunning views of the San Francisco Bay, the Bay Bridge, and a wide array of attractions, the Embarcadero is a dynamic destination that captures the essence of San Francisco.
