Discover more about Our Lady of Sorrows Roman Catholic Church

Our Lady of Sorrows Roman Catholic Church, located in the Upper East neighborhood of Santa Barbara, is more than just a place of worship; it's a historical landmark that reflects the city's evolution. The parish's roots trace back to 1782 with the founding of the Presidio Chapel, established to serve the Spanish army. Father Junipero Serra, celebrated Santa Barbara's first mass at the Presidio Chapel. As Santa Barbara transitioned from a Spanish outpost to an American town, the need for a dedicated parish church grew. Our Lady of Sorrows was established as the first modern parish in Santa Barbara in 1855. The original church was built by students from the nearby Apostolic College of Our Lady of Sorrows. Unfortunately, a fire destroyed the church in 1865, but it was rebuilt in 1867. In 1925, an earthquake caused significant damage to the church, leading to its reconstruction in 1929. The current church showcases Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, a style that defines much of Santa Barbara. The church's exterior, with its soft hues and bell towers, invites visitors to step inside and experience its serene atmosphere. Inside, the church features religious art and stained-glass windows. The sounds of the choir often fill the nave during services. The church also has gardens that provide a tranquil setting for leisurely strolls. Today, Our Lady of Sorrows continues to serve Santa Barbara's Catholic community, offering masses in both English and Spanish. Whether seeking spiritual solace or architectural appreciation, visitors can find a unique glimpse into Santa Barbara's religious heritage at Our Lady of Sorrows.
