Discover more about Stearns Wharf

Stearns Wharf, a prominent landmark in Santa Barbara, has been a vital part of the city's history since its completion in 1872. Built by John P. Stearns, a local lumberman, the wharf initially served as a crucial transportation hub for passengers and freight, connecting Santa Barbara to the outside world. Before its construction, transporting goods and people required navigating through challenging breakers and kelp. Over the years, Stearns Wharf has evolved into a vibrant destination for visitors. Today, it features a variety of attractions, including souvenir shops, seafood restaurants, wine tasting rooms, and the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History Sea Center. Visitors can enjoy activities such as fishing, boat rides, and simply strolling along the boardwalk while taking in the beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Ynez Mountains. Throughout its history, the wharf has faced numerous challenges, including storms and fires. Despite these setbacks, it has been rebuilt and restored, maintaining its status as the oldest working wooden wharf in California. The wharf is supported by over 2,300 pilings and stretches 2,300 feet long, covering an area of 3.8 acres. Stearns Wharf remains a testament to Santa Barbara's resilience and enduring connection to the sea.
