Discover more about Winchester Mystery House

The Winchester Mystery House stands as a testament to the eccentric vision of Sarah Winchester and a unique architectural landmark. Following the deaths of her infant daughter and husband, Sarah Winchester sought guidance from a spiritualist who convinced her that she was haunted by the spirits of those killed by Winchester rifles. To appease these spirits, she was instructed to move west and continuously build a house for them. In 1886, Sarah Winchester purchased an eight-room farmhouse in San Jose and began what would become a 36-year construction project. Without a master plan, the house grew into a sprawling mansion with 160 rooms, 10,000 windows, 2,000 doors, 47 stairways and fireplaces, and numerous other oddities. Many of these features, such as staircases leading to nowhere and doors that open to blank walls, contribute to the house's mysterious and unsettling atmosphere. Today, the Winchester Mystery House is open to the public for tours, allowing visitors to explore its bizarre architecture and learn about the legends surrounding its construction. The guided Mansion Tour takes guests through 110 of the 160 rooms, showcasing the unique attributes that give the mansion its name. Visitors can also explore the Victorian Gardens, a beautiful outdoor space featuring elegant paths, hedges, and thousands of trees. The house has also been investigated by paranormal experts and featured in movies and television shows.
