Discover more about Pasadena Public Library-Central Library

The Pasadena Public Library's Central Library, established in 1882, stands as a pillar of Pasadena's commitment to knowledge and community enrichment. The library was founded as a private subscription library called the “Pasadena Library and Village Improvement Society,” predating the city's incorporation by four years. The Central Library, located at 285 E Walnut St, is the main branch of the Pasadena Public Library system. The current Central Library building, designed by architects Myron Hunt and H.C. Chambers, opened on February 12, 1927, as the first building in Pasadena's now famous Civic Center. Its Mediterranean Revival architecture, featuring a walled entrance courtyard with a fountain, red clay tile roofs, and stucco exteriors, makes it a distinctive landmark. The Library, as well as the entire Civic Center, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The library is currently closed for seismic retrofitting to ensure the building's safety and preservation. A structural assessment in April 2021 revealed that the building is comprised of unreinforced masonry and requires a seismic upgrade. Renovation is set to begin in 2025, with projected completion in 2028. During the closure, library services and resources remain available at branch libraries and online. The Centennial Room within the Central Library houses the Pasadena History Collection, offering a glimpse into the city's past through photographs, books, and other historical materials.
