Getting There

  • Tuk-Tuk

    From the center of Kampot, head to the riverside area to find tuk-tuk drivers. Negotiate a fare to Phnom Kbal Romeas in Tuek Chhou; a round trip should cost around $10-15. The journey takes approximately 15 minutes from Kampot. The driver will take you along National Road 3 towards Kep, then turn onto a dirt road leading to the site. Arrange a return time with the driver.

  • Motorbike

    Rent a motorbike from various shops in Kampot for approximately $5 per day. Head southeast on National Road 3 towards Kep. After crossing the bridge, take the first dirt road to the left, and at the next junction, take another left. Cross the railway tracks and go straight under the arch to arrive at Phnom Kbal Romeas. The ride takes about 15 minutes from Kampot. Parking is available near the site.

Phnom Kbal Romeas, nestled in the Kampot Province of Cambodia, is a small mountain riddled with dramatic caves that weave throughout its interior. This prehistoric site, inhabited since Neolithic times (5000-3000 BC), has become a popular destination for tourists seeking a mix of history and adventure. Upon entering the first natural chamber of the cave, visitors cross a bridge to find a small Buddhist shrine. Further exploration reveals a large cavernous area with multiple paths. A small set of stairs leads to an even larger space, where remnants of an ancient site can be found, including a mini-stupa made of bricks and a cavernous area with a brick floor. Some carvings can also be seen on one side of the cave. Phnom Kbal Romeas is also known for its rock climbing activities, offered by Climbodia. The mountain offers routes for all skill levels, with breathtaking views of Kampot's countryside, the islands in the ocean, salt fields, and Bokor Mountain from the summit. On a clear day, you can even see as far as Phu Quoc, Vietnam. The serene environment and lush greenery surrounding the site enhance its historical allure, inviting visitors to reflect on Cambodia's rich cultural heritage.
