Phnom Bok: A Serene Mountain Temple

Phnom Bok, a captivating Hindu temple, graces the summit of a 235-meter hill northeast of the Eastern Baray in Cambodia. Constructed in the late 9th and early 10th centuries by King Yasovarman I, the founder of Angkor, it forms a trilogy with Phnom Bakheng and Phnom Krom, each bearing a similar layout. Dedicated to the Hindu Trimurti—Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva—Phnom Bok provides a serene escape and a glimpse into Angkor's rich history. The temple complex features three identical sanctuary towers arranged in a row on a single terrace. These towers once housed statues of the respective gods. While the temple is not fully restored, it retains its charm with intricate stone carvings and architectural remnants of the Khmer civilization.Reaching the temple requires climbing over 600 steps or traversing a jungle path, rewarding visitors with stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including rice paddies, Phnom Kulen, and, on clear days, even Angkor Wat. The climb, though challenging, adds to the sense of discovery and accomplishment. Despite its historical importance, Phnom Bok remains relatively untouristed, offering a tranquil experience away from the crowds. The temple is open daily from 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM.
