Prasat Kravan: A Serene Brick Sanctuary

Prasat Kravan, located within the Angkor Archaeological Park, stands as a testament to the Khmer empire's rich Hindu heritage. Constructed in 921 AD during the reign of King Harshavarman I, the temple is dedicated to Vishnu and features five brick towers aligned north to south. The temple's modern name, 'Kravan,' refers to the artabotrys odoratissimus, a fragrant creeper, or 'Shrine of Cardamom,' suggesting the presence of such trees in the area. What sets Prasat Kravan apart is its unique architecture and the intricate bas-reliefs carved directly into the brick walls of the interior. This is a departure from the more common sandstone construction found in other Angkor temples. The central tower, the tallest of the five, once housed a linga on a pedestal. The north tower is dedicated to Lakshmi, Vishnu's consort, with bas-reliefs depicting the goddess. The south tower's interior is undecorated but features a lintel with Vishnu on his mount, Garuda. These well-preserved carvings offer a glimpse into the religious beliefs and artistic skills of the time. Though smaller and less crowded than other major temples like Angkor Wat or Bayon, Prasat Kravan offers a peaceful and rewarding experience. Its symmetry and classical lines make it a great photo opportunity, especially in the early morning light.
