Discover more about Prasat Preah Vihear

Prasat Preah Vihear, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, stands as a testament to the architectural prowess and spiritual beliefs of the Khmer Empire. Located in the Preah Vihear province of Cambodia, near the Thai border, the temple complex occupies a dramatic clifftop setting in the Dângrêk Mountains. Its position offers panoramic views of the Cambodian plains, creating a visually stunning experience for visitors. Construction of the temple began in the 9th century and continued through the 12th century, with contributions from several Khmer kings. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Prasat Preah Vihear was designed to represent Mount Meru, the sacred mountain in Hindu cosmology. Unlike most Khmer temples, it features a unique north-south axis layout, distinguishing it from the traditional rectangular design oriented towards the east. The temple complex consists of a series of sanctuaries connected by staircases and pavements, stretching over 800 meters. The intricate carvings and detailed architecture showcase the skill and artistry of the Khmer civilization. The site has five gopuras, or pavilions, each adorned with exquisite carvings. As you walk through the temple, you'll witness the blend of religious symbolism and architectural grandeur. Over the centuries, Prasat Preah Vihear has been a source of tension between Cambodia and Thailand. The International Court of Justice ruled the temple to be in Cambodia in 1962, but disputes continued. Today, the temple stands as a symbol of resilience and a reminder of the region's complex history. Despite its tumultuous past, Prasat Preah Vihear welcomes visitors to explore its ancient stones and soak in the awe-inspiring views.
