Discover more about Ta Som

Ta Som, nestled in the northeastern section of Angkor Thom, offers a serene escape from the more crowded temples of Angkor. Built in the late 12th century during the reign of King Jayavarman VII, this single-shrine temple is dedicated to his father, Dharanindravarman II. The temple's design reflects the Bayon style, characterized by its four-faced towers and Buddhist symbolism. Like many Angkor temples, Ta Som was abandoned and reclaimed by the jungle. Restoration efforts have been undertaken, most notably by the World Monuments Fund, which began work in 1998 to stabilize the structure and improve visitor access. However, Ta Som has been left partially unrestored, allowing nature to intertwine with the stone architecture, creating a unique and photogenic atmosphere. The temple is enclosed by three laterite walls, with gopuras (entrance gateways) on each cardinal direction. The eastern gopura is particularly famous for the massive roots of a sacred fig tree (Ficus religiosa) that have grown over and through the structure, creating an iconic image. Inside the inner courtyard, you'll find intricate carvings and well-preserved relief work. Ta Som offers a glimpse into the architectural prowess of the Khmer empire and the enduring power of nature.
