A Coast Outside the Old Port

Before Sihanoukville developed as Cambodia’s principal modern seaport, the coast around Independence Beach was largely peripheral to the country’s urban life. The area formed part of the forested and lightly settled shoreline near the settlement that became Sihanoukville, rather than an established historic quarter with dense streets or long-standing civic institutions.
