Mount Febe: Yaoundé's Overlook

Mount Febe, a prominent hill overlooking Yaoundé, holds significance as both a natural landmark and a cultural site. Rising to an elevation of approximately 1,060 meters, it provides sweeping views of the city and its surroundings. The name 'Febe' translates to 'wind' in the local Ewondo language, a testament to the fresh breezes that characterize the area.Historically, Mount Febe has been a place of importance and tranquility. In 1964, a Benedictine monastery was established on its slopes, marking the first Benedictine presence in Cameroon. This monastery houses a museum showcasing Cameroonian traditional arts, including masks, stools, musical instruments, and beaded statues. The museum's collection, started by Swiss monk Father Luitfrid Marfurt, features unique artifacts known as 'Abbias,' carvings made from dried fruit skins depicting African life. The monastery also provides spiritual retreats and operates a technical college.On one of the flanks of Mount Febe sits the Mont Febe Hotel, built in 1968. It was a popular spot for Cameroon's first president, Ahmadou Ahidjo, and has remained a gathering place for the elite.
