The monument is dedicated to Gustav Nachtigal (1834-1885), a German explorer, physician, and imperial commissioner. Nachtigal was instrumental in establishing German protectorates in West Africa, including Togoland and Kamerun (now Cameroon) in 1884.The monument itself is an obelisk-shaped structure. While its design is simple, it stands as a symbol of a complex period in Douala's history. The surrounding Bonanjo district features other buildings from the colonial era, providing a glimpse into the architectural styles of the time.Gustav Nachtigal's legacy is complex. He was tasked with establishing German claims in West Africa, leading to the colonization of the region. He died at sea in 1885 and was initially buried in Grand Bassam, Ivory Coast. In 1888, his remains were moved and reburied in Douala in front of the Kamerun colonial government building. While Nachtigal is remembered for his explorations and role in German colonization, his actions also contributed to a period of foreign rule in Cameroon.
