Discover more about Limbe Wildlife Centre

The Limbe Wildlife Centre (LWC), established in 1993, is a joint effort by the Cameroonian government and the Pandrillus Foundation, an NGO, dedicated to wildlife rescue, rehabilitation, and conservation education. The center aims to protect Cameroonian wildlife by enforcing wildlife laws, promoting conservation, and bridging the gap between animal welfare and conservation. Located in Limbe, the LWC provides a safe haven for animals rescued from the illegal bushmeat and pet trades. Many animals arrive as tiny orphans after their mothers are killed by poachers. The center focuses on rehabilitating these animals and, when possible, releasing them back into the wild. However, some animals cannot be released due to the severity of their injuries or habituation to humans. The LWC is home to approximately 15 primate species native to Cameroon, including gorillas, chimpanzees, drills, mandrills, baboons, mangabeys, and guenons. It has Africa's best record for gorilla rehabilitation and care, including the only known Cross River gorilla in captivity. Besides primates, the center also cares for other animals like small carnivores, duikers, birds, and reptiles. Visitors can observe the rescued animals in healthy social groups within enriched environments. The LWC also plays a vital role in conservation efforts by actively participating in implementing national wildlife protection laws. It provides an opportunity for locals to learn about their natural heritage and the importance of conservation. The center welcomes around 50,000 visitors annually, with a focus on engaging the local community through education and outreach programs.
