Cameroon Line: A Volcanic Hotspot

The Cameroon Line is a remarkable geological formation, a 1,600 km-long chain of volcanoes that extends from the Atlantic Ocean into the heart of Cameroon. This volcanic line is not only a geographical feature but also a natural border between eastern Nigeria and western Cameroon. It comprises a series of both oceanic and continental volcanoes, creating a diverse and fascinating landscape.The oceanic segment of the Cameroon Line includes the islands of Annobón, São Tomé, Príncipe, and Bioko. These islands are volcanic swells rising from the ocean floor, each with its unique characteristics. On the mainland, the line begins with Mount Cameroon, an active volcano, and extends northeastward through the Western High Plateau. This area is home to several other volcanic swells, including Manengouba, Bamboutu, and the Oku Massif.The Cameroon Line is known for its active volcanism. Mount Cameroon, for example, has erupted several times in the past, shaping the surrounding landscape. In 1986, Lake Nyos, a crater lake in the Oku volcanic plain, released a cloud of carbon dioxide gas that killed at least 1,200 people.
