    Public Transportation

    From Douala International Airport (DLA), take a bus towards Buea. Buses are available from various transport companies. The journey to Buea takes approximately 1 hour and 6 minutes and costs around $21. From Buea, hire a local taxi or 'moto-taxi' (motorcycle taxi) to the Mount Cameroon National Park entrance. This should cost approximately 1,000-2,000 CFA francs.

    Driving

    From Douala, head towards Buea via the N3 highway. The drive is approximately 70 km and takes around 45 minutes. Once in Buea, follow signs to Mount Cameroon National Park. Limited parking is available near the main trailhead. Ensure you have sufficient fuel as services within the park are limited.

    Mount Cameroon, also known as Mongo ma Ndemi ('Mountain of Greatness' in the local Bakweri language), is a majestic and active volcano rising to 4,040 meters (13,255 feet). As the highest peak in West Africa, it dominates the landscape and offers a unique and challenging trekking experience. Located near the Gulf of Guinea, the mountain's volcanic activity has shaped its diverse environment, creating a stunning contrast between lush rainforests at its base and a barren, volcanic summit.The mountain holds cultural significance for the local people, and its volcanic activity has been recorded for centuries. The earliest recorded observation may have been made by Hanno the Navigator, a Carthaginian explorer, around the 5th century BC. More recently, eruptions occurred in 1959, 1999, and 2000, with the latest in 2012. These eruptions have created lava flows that can be observed along the hiking trails.Hiking Mount Cameroon is a popular activity, with the best time to climb being during the dry season from December to early March. Treks can last from one to four days, depending on fitness level and desired route. The most popular route, the Guinness Trail, starts near Buea and leads to the summit. Along the way, hikers pass through farmland, dense forests, and finally, a volcanic landscape above the tree line. Huts are available for overnight stays.Mount Cameroon National Park, established in 2014, protects the mountain's unique biodiversity. The park is home to a variety of plant and animal species, including many birds. The annual Mount Cameroon Race of Hope attracts athletes from around the world to compete in a challenging race to the summit.
