  • Public Transport

    To reach Dja Faunal Reserve via public transport, take a bush taxi from Yaoundé to Sangmélima, with a typical fare of around 2,000 CFA francs. The journey takes approximately 6-7 hours. From Sangmélima, take another bush taxi to Djoum for about 2,000 CFA francs. Upon arriving in Djoum, hire a local motorcycle taxi (benskin) to the Dja Faunal Reserve entrance for around 1,500 CFA francs. Ensure you agree on the fare before starting your ride.

  • Car

    If driving, start from Yaoundé and head south on the N1 highway towards Sangmélima. From Sangmélima, continue towards Djoum, approximately 70 kilometers away. Then, take the road to the Dja Faunal Reserve entrance. A 4x4 vehicle is recommended due to unpaved roads. Expect to pay an entrance fee to the reserve, typically around 5,000 CFA francs.

The Dja Faunal Reserve, established in 1950 and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, is a remarkable sanctuary of biodiversity in southeastern Cameroon. As an integral part of the Congo Basin rainforest, it represents one of the largest and best-protected rainforests in Africa, with approximately 90% of its area remaining undisturbed.Nearly encircled by the Dja River, which acts as a natural boundary, the reserve spans an estimated 526,000 hectares. This unique geographical feature contributes to its rich and varied ecosystem, fostering a wide array of plant and animal life. The Dja Faunal Reserve is home to over 100 mammal species, more than 320 bird species, and over 1,500 known plant species.The reserve is particularly renowned for its diverse primate population, including threatened species such as the western lowland gorilla, chimpanzee, mandrill, and drill. Other notable inhabitants include forest elephants, leopards, bongos, and the African grey parrot. Visitors may also encounter the Baka people, an indigenous community living within the reserve's boundaries who maintain their traditional lifestyle. They are permitted to hunt using traditional methods, adding a cultural dimension to the reserve's significance.While the Dja Faunal Reserve offers an unparalleled opportunity to experience Africa's pristine wilderness, it faces threats from poaching and logging.
