History of West Region

The Bamoun Kingdom, founded in the late 14th century, is one of the most significant historical entities in the West Region of Cameroon. Established by the Bamoun people, it reached its zenith under Sultan Njoya in the 19th century. Sultan Njoya is renowned for his modernization efforts, including the creation of the Shumom script and the construction of the Foumban Royal Palace, which remains a cultural landmark.
