Hunt Lake: A Whiteshell Wilderness Gem

Hunt Lake is a captivating destination found within the expansive Whiteshell Provincial Park in Manitoba. The lake itself is relatively small, but it is the popular Hunt Lake Trail that truly defines this location. This 12.6 km (return) hiking trail is renowned for its rugged terrain and rewarding vistas, drawing hikers and nature lovers alike.The Hunt Lake Trail winds its way past Hunt Lake and follows the eastern shoreline of West Hawk Lake. The path is characterized by steep ascents and descents over rocky, root-covered ground, making it a challenging trek that requires a reasonable level of fitness. However, the effort is well worth it, as hikers are treated to breathtaking panoramic views from atop the cliffs overlooking West Hawk Lake. The trail showcases the quintessential Canadian Shield landscape, with its boreal forest, granite outcrops, and the clear, deep waters of the lake.Originally, the Hunt Lake Trail formed a complete loop, but the section that extended south into Ontario is no longer maintained. While this abandoned portion can still be traversed by experienced hikers with proper navigation skills and a willingness to bushwhack, it is generally recommended to stick to the well-marked out-and-back trail.Whiteshell Provincial Park, in which Hunt Lake resides, is a four-season destination offering a wide array of outdoor activities.
