Discover more about Minto Armouries

Minto Armouries, located in Winnipeg's West End, is a significant historical and architectural landmark. Constructed in 1914-1915, the armoury was designed by Chief Dominion Architect David Ewart and exemplifies Tudor Revival architecture, complete with square corner towers and an arched entrance. The distinctive red bricks were produced by the Sidney Brickworks, also used for other important Winnipeg buildings. The armoury serves as the home base for several military units, including The Royal Winnipeg Rifles, The Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada, and the 38 Signal Regiment. The Royal Winnipeg Rifles Museum is located within the armouries and is open to the public on Tuesdays from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM, or by appointment. In 1956, a fire caused extensive damage, destroying the original wooden roof, which was subsequently replaced with a steel truss structure. Despite the fire, many historical artifacts were saved. The Minto Armouries was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1991. Today, it continues to serve as an active military structure, blending seamlessly into the residential character of its surroundings.
