Discover more about Pointe-à-la-Renommée Lighthouse

Pointe-à-la-Renommée Lighthouse stands as a testament to Quebec's rich maritime past. The site, first marked by a wooden lighthouse in 1880, guided countless navigators through the treacherous waters of the St. Lawrence. In 1904, it became home to North America's first maritime wireless telegraphy station, established by Guglielmo Marconi, playing a crucial role in saving lives at sea. The original wooden structure was replaced in 1907 with a prefabricated cast-iron lighthouse, a unique design for its time. The lighthouse operated until 1975, after which it faced an unusual fate: it was dismantled and moved to Quebec City in 1978. For nearly two decades, it stood in the Old Port, before a dedicated citizens' committee campaigned for its return to its original Gaspé location in 1997. Today, the Pointe-à-la-Renommée heritage site offers an immersive experience. Visitors can explore the lighthouse, the reconstructed Marconi station, and exhibits detailing the lives of the lightkeepers and wireless operators. Hiking trails weave through the area, providing breathtaking views of the coastline and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The site is open from June to October, offering guided tours and interactive exhibits for all ages.
