Discover more about St. Paul Co-Cathedral

St. Paul's Co-Cathedral, located in the heart of Saskatoon at 720 Spadina Crescent East, is more than just a place of worship; it's a testament to the city's history and the enduring strength of its Catholic community. Overlooking the South Saskatchewan River, this red-brick building with Tyndall stone trim has been a spiritual anchor since the early 20th century. Designed by architect Joseph Fortin, who also contributed to the Saskatchewan Legislature Building, the cathedral showcases Romanesque Revival architecture with Gothic influences. Its striking square tower, octagonal belfry adorned with red-and-white Lombard bands, copper-covered steeple, and green slate roof make it an iconic landmark. The interior houses a Casavant pipe organ installed in 1912, filling the space with music during services and events. The stained-glass windows, added in 1945 and 1976, commemorate those who lost their lives in World War II and a devastating fire, respectively. Blackened timbers, a faint reminder of the 1976 fire, can still be seen in the ceiling. Originally a parish church, St. Paul's became a pro-cathedral in 1921 and a full cathedral in 1934 when the Diocese of Saskatoon was established. In 2011, with the opening of the new Holy Family Cathedral, St. Paul's was designated a co-cathedral, continuing its legacy as a vital parish and a historical treasure. In 2019, two paintings by Berthold Imhoff were added to the sanctuary. Despite facing challenges, including vandalism in 2021, St. Paul's Co-Cathedral remains a resilient symbol of faith, heritage, and community in Saskatoon.
