Discover more about Trappist Monastery Provincial Heritage Park

The Trappist Monastery Provincial Heritage Park offers a unique blend of history, tranquility, and natural beauty on the banks of the La Salle River in Winnipeg. Founded in 1892 by five Trappist monks from France, the monastery, named Our Lady of the Prairies, was a place of prayer, work, and contemplation for over 80 years. The monks, members of the Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance, followed the Rule of St. Benedict, living a quiet, secluded life. As Winnipeg grew, the encroaching urban life led the Trappist monks to relocate to a more secluded site near Holland, Manitoba, in 1978. Five years later, in 1983, a fire destroyed the vacated church and residential wing, leaving behind the ruins that stand today. The site was designated as a provincial heritage park in 1988. Today, visitors can explore the stabilized ruins of the Romanesque Revival church and monastic wing, and wander the landscaped grounds. The former guest house now houses the St. Norbert Arts Centre, hosting art exhibitions and community events. The park also features a World Peace Pagoda, built in 2000 by the Dharma Centre of Winnipeg and the Buddhist community of Manitoba. The park provides recreational opportunities such as walking and picnicking.
