History of Puerto Varas

Indigenous Landscapes Before Settlement

The basin around Lake Llanquihue formed part of the ancestral territory of Mapuche and Huilliche communities long before the modern town appeared. These communities travelled, traded and managed resources across the lake district, whose forests, waterways and volcanic soils supported varied forms of subsistence.
