Discover more about The Blowholes

Located on the rugged southern coast of Christmas Island, The Blowholes are a testament to the raw power of the ocean. Over millennia, relentless waves have carved fissures and tunnels into the limestone cliffs, creating a natural spectacle where seawater erupts with tremendous force. When the swell is up, the crashing waves force huge volumes of water through these natural tubes, launching impressive geysers high into the air. These explosive spouts can reach up to 20 meters, accompanied by a thunderous roar that amplifies the visual drama. An elevated walkway and viewing platforms offer visitors a safe and stunning vantage point to witness this breathtaking display. Even when the Blowholes aren't actively spraying, the raised platforms provide panoramic views of the rugged southern coastline. The area is also home to unique flora and fauna, including the island's famous red crabs, which migrate in droves, adding a vibrant touch to the already stunning landscape. Visiting during high tide maximizes the chances of witnessing the most spectacular blowhole displays. However, the Blowholes are even more spectacular during the red crab migration, when thousands of crabs scramble over the jagged rocks as water crashes around them. Vehicle tracks to the Blowholes may be closed during the red crab migration and return of juvenile red crabs. During these periods, the tracks will be closed until 10.30 am every day (the time of peak crab activity). Rangers will check each track between 10.30 am and 11.00 am to determine if it can be opened to vehicles. If the track can be opened, it will remain open until 3.30 pm, by which time all vehicles must be out of the area. If the track cannot be opened, it will remain closed until the following morning's check.
