Getting There

  • Public Transport

    From Pasto's main bus terminal, take a bus towards Buesaco. Buses operate frequently, and the fare is approximately 5,000 COP. In Buesaco, take a taxi or local bus to Galeras Nature Sanctuary for around 20,000 COP; the ride is about 20 minutes. Agree on the fare with the driver before starting.

  • Car

    From Pasto, take the Pan-American Highway (Carrera 1) south towards Buesaco. Continue for about 23 kilometers until you reach Buesaco. Turn right towards Galeras Nature Sanctuary and follow the road for approximately 10 kilometers to the entrance. Be aware that some sections of the road may be unpaved.

Galeras Nature Sanctuary, located in the department of Nariño in southwestern Colombia, is a protected area encompassing the Galeras Volcano, one of the country's most active volcanoes. The sanctuary spans 76.15 km² and includes diverse ecosystems such as páramo, high Andean forests, and Andean forests. This creates a rich environment for a wide array of flora and fauna. The sanctuary is an important water source, with approximately 125 streams, rivers, and lagoons, including the Negra, Verde, and Telpis lagoons, which supply water to surrounding communities. The only area currently open to visitors for ecotourism is the Telpis Lagoon sector, where local guides are required. Here, you can hike through the unique landscape and observe the diverse birdlife, with over 200 species recorded. Wildlife enthusiasts may also spot deer, páramo wolves, and Colombian weasels. Visitors can engage in hiking, birdwatching, and nature photography. The sanctuary also serves as a center for scientific research and environmental education. Due to the volcano's activity, it's essential to stay informed about its status and follow the guidance of authorities and guides.
