Discover more about 207 - Museo de Arquitectura Leopoldo Rother

The Museo de Arquitectura Leopoldo Rother stands as Colombia's only museum exclusively dedicated to architecture. Established in 1986, it is housed within the former printing press building of the National University of Colombia, a structure designed by Leopoldo Rother himself in 1948. This building is celebrated as a prime example of modern architecture in Colombia. The museum's 643 square meters encompass five exhibition halls, a lobby, and a small auditorium. While the museum's collection is extensive, it primarily hosts temporary exhibitions focusing on Colombian, Latin American, and global architectural themes due to space and conservation constraints. Unlike archives that safeguard architectural documents, the Leopoldo Rother Museum distinguishes itself by exhibiting and studying architecture, providing a unique perspective within Colombia's cultural landscape. Leopoldo Rother (1894-1978) was a German-born architect, urban planner, and educator who significantly influenced the development of modern architecture in Colombia. Forced to flee Germany due to his Jewish heritage, Rother immigrated to Colombia in 1936. He designed many public buildings and taught at the National University. His most renowned work is the National University's Bogotá campus, a 121-hectare area designed in an oval shape with simple, block-style buildings.
