Yaigojé Apaporis National Natural Park: A Sanctuary of Biodiversity and Indigenous Culture

Yaigojé Apaporis National Natural Park, situated in the heart of the Colombian Amazon, stands as a testament to the harmonious coexistence of nature and indigenous culture. Established to protect the ancestral lands and cultural heritage of the local indigenous communities, the park encompasses over a million hectares of rainforest. It is the traditional territory of the Makuna, Tanimuka, Tuyuca, Cabiyari, and Letuama peoples, who maintain a deep spiritual connection with their surroundings. The park's creation in 2009 was driven by the Indigenous Traditional Authorities, seeking to protect their territory from external threats such as mining. Today, the park is managed through a unique collaboration between the Colombian National Natural Parks and the Indigenous Captains Yaigojé Apaporis Association (ACIYA), blending traditional knowledge with modern conservation practices. This partnership ensures the preservation of the park's rich biodiversity and the cultural integrity of its indigenous communities. The park boasts exceptional biodiversity, with preliminary records indicating 362 species of birds, 79 of reptiles, 73 of amphibians, 201 of fish, and around 400 species of butterflies. The area is also home to various mammal species, many of which are unique to Colombia and other national protected areas. The park's diverse ecosystems, including forests on terraces, slopes, and white sands, contribute to its ecological significance.
